Here’s what each week actually looks like in the classroom.

Week 1 · Plant kale

It All Starts with a Seed!

Week one is all about the magic of nature: understanding the incredible biological features and adaptations of seeds and plants, and drawing some parallels between the needs of plants and the needs of people. We are complex and incredible organisms too, and we need to be cared for and nurtured. We start with some science and nutrition activities, pause for a quick breathing exercise, and then move into the day’s planting: kale. Students plant and water one pot each and place them on the rack to start germinating. We’ll be back next week! If there’s extra time, there are some cool timelapse videos of seeds germinating into growing plants for students to watch.

Week 2 · Plant arugula

Food Is Fuel

This week we explore the relationship between food and our bodies. Students discover what makes food nourishing and why eating a diverse range of foods matters. We explore the difference between processed and whole foods in a non-judgmental way and briefly touch on the emotional side of eating. Then it’s time for our next round of planting: arugula, one pot per student. If there’s extra time after planting, there’s a breathwork activity and a gratitude round.

Week 3 · Plant radish

Where Does Food Come From?

This week is all about systems thinking and feeling our connection to the world around us. Students explore the interconnectedness of our food system, get an overview of where food actually comes from, and learn about the benefits of local food. Then we plant our final crop: radishes. All three crops we’ve planted will be ready on the same day: harvest day next week! If there’s extra time, there’s another box breathing exercise.

Week 4 · Harvest

Harvest Day!

The day has come to taste the fruits of our labor! We start with a quick check-in, asking students to identify their feelings on an emotion wheel. Then we jump into an activity that explores the difference between eating for taste and eating for fuel, followed by a group sharing circle as a capstone to the full experience. Then it’s time: we get right into the harvest! Students each harvest three microgreen pots, gather the greens, dress them with salad dressing, and dig in. Congratulations, you may now eat your homework!

Most teachers don't pay for this themselves

Teachers fund their grow labs through a local sponsor, a small grant, their PTO, or DonorsChoose. We've written the templates for each, and it takes about ten minutes to start.
